EPILOGUE

St Paul’s Cathedral. Twelve months later.

IT WAS SATURDAY AFTERNOON, just after four p.m. The weather was warm, but not hot. No rain in sight. All the wedding guests were seated. The bridegroom and his two best men were waiting somewhat impatiently at the head of the aisle for the bride to arrive.

‘Alex said to tell you that he’s brought the gun,’ Sergio whispered to Jeremy.

Jeremy’s head jerked back as he turned and stared at his two best men. ‘What in God’s name are you talking about?’

‘You said if you ever fell in love,’ Alex elaborated, ‘that I was to shoot you.’

Jeremy had to laugh, which brought a mock glare from Sergio. ‘Have some decorum. You’re about to be married. Marriage is serious business and not to be joked over.’

‘You can say that again,’ Jeremy returned. ‘I’m a bundle of nerves.’

‘Not having any second thoughts?’ Alex asked cheekily.

‘Hell, no. Frankly, I’ve never looked forward to something so much in all my life. If I’d had my way I would have been married months ago, but Alice wouldn’t have a bar of it. She said she wanted to be a June bride, with all the trimmings. She wouldn’t even agree to move in with me, said I had to wait till she was Mrs Jeremy Barker-Whittle for that privilege.’

‘She’s one strong-minded woman,’ Sergio said. ‘But then that’s exactly what you needed, Jeremy. You were way too used to getting your own way with women.’

‘That’s what Alice always says. And Madge.’

‘Who the hell is Madge?’

‘My PA.’

Alex nodded. ‘Well, we all have to keep an eye on you,’ he said. ‘Women seem to fall in love with you even when you don’t do a damned thing. I was down at the back of the church a little while ago and there was a row of attractive young ladies sitting there, chattering away, the subject of their conversation being what did the bride have that they didn’t have. All exes of yours, I gathered.’

Jeremy smiled. ‘I could have told them.’

‘Then tell us,’ Sergio suggested. ‘We have to talk about something, given how late the bride is.’

Jeremy thought for a long moment, then sighed. ‘It’s actually quite difficult to put into words. Alice is an enigma. A contradiction in terms. Not contrary. But she has two sides to her personality, both of which I love. She’s fire and ice. Light and dark. She’s not perfect by any means, but then who is? But she’s perfect to me. I love her stubbornness and her fierce independence. I love her compassion, and her passion. But most of all I love the way she fell in love with me, despite knowing what I was. She looked past the shallow life that I’d been living and saw the decent man that I could become.’

‘The man you have become, my friend,’ Sergio said admiringly. ‘Alex and I are very proud of you.’

‘Amen to that,’ Alex agreed. ‘Hey, I think your paragon has finally arrived.’

Whatever else they might have said
